RETREAT OR REGROUP
A major victory shook the African continent, following the entrustment of the reigns of Gabon to Ngeuma Oligui. The winds of change blew and ended a familial rule of five decades. Finally, legitimate & long awaited action against the Bongo regime could be taken. Since 2023, the ousted former president, Ali Bongo and his family had been detained on various charges.
While the former head of state was placed under house arrest, his family including his wife and son, Sylvia and Noureddin, were detained at an underground facility. The military junta had accused Mr. Bongo's rule of extensive corruption and poor governance, but he has not been indicted. The leader of the coup had also declared that after elections, the former president and his spouse would be tried for embezzlement.
This would explain why the news of the of his sudden exit of the country caught people by surprise. A few days ago, Sylvia and Noureddin flew with the 62-year-old former president to Angola, following his release from detention. Although no public comment has been made by the family concerning the charges. Their family lawyer however, described their treatment during detention as cruel and possessing elements of torture.
Concerning the trials, we have still not heard news about the progress of its possibility. Thus, concerns are rising over the retreat to Angola. Many see this as a simple means of escape by the former president, who may be using border laws to avoid indictment and arrest. There is also the possibility that Bongo may be planning a return.
It goes without saying that the leadership structure left in place by the Bongos would take time to reorganize and rearrange. In fact, power plays may still be in motion even with the key personality out of “play”.
The ball however remains in Nguema’s court; in line with his directive to weed out corruption at its root. We remain hopeful for more news concerning the Bongo family, and the road to transparent leadership.
